Mixing thin-flowing products

We often get questions about mixing thin-lowing products such as thin-flowing plaster and self-levelling floor putty. If you don't mix correctly, the product will become lumpy. It simply does not integrate the water as it should.

GUIDE: 5 steps for mixing thin-flowing products

In this guide we show you how to mix thin-flowing plaster. I.e. a product without aggregates of more than 8mm, and therefore we use the mixing arms with steel blades. When mixing material with aggregates remember to use mixing arms with rubber blades. They are flexible so drum and gearbox do not risk unneccessary wear.

Step 1 of 5: Look into mixing ratio and time

Make sure you follow the instructions on your material in regards to both mixing ratio and time. Know that the mixing method varies from brand to brand.

ALWAYS follow the instructions on your material.

Step 2 of 5: Measure the water

It's a good idea to measure the water you're going to use, so you don't risk pouring too much in.

If it turns out you need more water, measure what you're adding too. Then you know exactly how much water goes into this mix.

BEWARE, that temperature and moisture in the air, both influence how much water you need for your mix.

If it's a hot and dry day, you might need to add more water than usually; if it's a moist and cool day, you might need to add less.

Step 3 of 5: Add the dry product

Before adding the dry product, turn on your SoRoTo® Dust Controller and your industial vacuum cleaner. That is if you own one, of course. This way you avoid breathing in the dangerous dust.

If you don't own a Dust Controller, read more about it here.

Pour all of your dry product into the mixer. In the video we mix thin-flowing plaster in a 120L SoRoTo® Forced Action Mixer, and we use 2 bags of dry product.

Step 4 of 5: Add some of the water

Pour 2/3 of the water i the dry mix, and let the machine mix for a couple of minutes. We let it mix for 2-3 minutes, but remember to follow the instructions on the product.

It should turn into a smooth, thick mass.

Step 5 of 5: Add the rest of the water

Pour the rest of the water in and let it mix for as long as the prescription says, untill the material is lean again.

The water will not integrate for some time, so BEWARE not to pour too much in!

When mixing thin-flowing plaster, as we do in the video, it takes some mixng time untill the product turns as fluent as it needs to be.

BEWARE that the mixing time varies from product to product, so please check the instructions.
